Tense Doesn’t Even Cover It: Trap by Lilja Sigurðardóttir @lilja1972 @OrendaBooks #RandomThingsTours @AnneCater

Sometimes I receive emails with the name of an author and I can’t help but ‘squeeeeee’. That’s what happened when I was invited to take part in the blog tour for Trap, the second book in the Reykjavik trilogy by the amazingly talented Lilja Sigurðardóttir!

Thank you to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for providing me with an e-copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.

Title: Trap (Reykjavik Trilogy book 2)
Author: Lilja Sigurðardóttir
Date of publication: 2018 (ebook out!)
Publisher: Orenda Books
Format: Digital Proof Copy

Happily settled in Florida, Sonja believes she’s finally escaped the trap set by unscrupulous drug lords. But when her son Tomas is taken, she’s back to square one … and Iceland. Her lover, Agla, is awaiting sentencing for financial misconduct after the banking crash, and Sonja refuses to see her. And that’s not all…

Agla owes money to some extremely powerful men, and they’ll stop at nothing to get it back. With her former nemesis, customs officer Bragi, on her side, Sonja puts her own plan into motion, to bring down the drug barons and her scheming ex-husband, and get Tomas back safely. But things aren’t as straightforward as they seem, and Sonja finds herself caught in the centre of a trap that will put all of their lives at risk…

Set in a Reykjavík still covered in the dust of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption, and with a dark, fast-paced and chilling plot and intriguing characters, Trap is an outstandingly original and sexy Nordic crime thriller, from one of the most exciting new names in crime fiction.

Now, one problem: this book is the ham sandwiched between the cheese and the salad. How do you review a book in a series without spoiling anything? Well, in my case, I put feelings first and keep things short in the hope you will be intrigued enough to catch up and fall in love with a fantastic and compelling trilogy.

After the waves of the first novel, Sonja, main character (and so much more) is doing her best to get used to a new life and to blend into the mass. But reality won’t let her go so easily. We are talking about big money and drugs; those people don’t give up.

But here, you see, details are very sketchy!

Let’s see if I can give you a better picture.

Trap is a drug itself. You start reading, your heart pounds loudly in your chest, your hands might not shake if you have enough nerves but you start sweating anyway. You run on tension and adrenaline. Trap is a strong book.

But Trap also gives you a softer side, a heart-wrenching dilemma of a mother ready to do anything to keep her son. Ready to smuggle drugs if that’s what it takes.

You can pick Trap without fearing you’ll get stuck with an emotionless action thriller. The beauty in Lilja Sigurðardóttir’s writing is that she masters the balance between raw and sweet, joy and pain. She knows what makes human beings tick and her sense of observation combined with her understanding of the world around her makes this novel multi-layered, filled with the harsh reality of a woman, a mother, a friend, a lover.

There is no time to lose. Sonja’s lover Agla is involved with the massive bank scandals of 2008 and surrounded by sharks, too. Sonja herself is torn between doing what is right and going back to a life she was good at to find a way to retrieve her son. Customs officer Bragi is facing one of life’s most difficult times.

Danger is everywhere. I loved every minute, every sentence, every word that made the trap close in on Sonja. Would she make it? I rooted for her with all my strength, thanking the author for creating such a beautiful and human character stuck in life’s ocean. If you want to read about what to do when the universe throws you rocks, meet Sonja and get inspired. There is so much to learn from Trap. Oh and you will never walk into an airport the same way.

Drugs are not what make Trap addictive. Count on each character to make you discover sides of themselves you are bound to react to. Prepare yourself to want to fight, take sides, stand open-mouthed for two minutes in a crowd. Be ready for a cold, chilling and beautifully intricate plot. Brace yourself because Lilja Sigurðardóttir proves that a second book in a trilogy can blow your mind! There is no respite with Trap. Just the best Icelandic Noir has to offer.

  1. This book sounds like it’s tense, but also character based and I love those kind of stories.
And I totally get you, when you’re invited for the blog tour of an author dear to you, you can’t help but let a little happy ‘squeeee’ (or in my case, do a little happy book shimmy.
