This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found . A similar meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.
My new treatment ruined my reading plans so I did not make as much progress as I was hoping this week 😦
∧ Then ∧ In Her Wake, Amanda Jennings
A perfect life … until she discovered it wasn’t her own.
A tragic family event reveals devastating news that rips apart Bella’s comfortable existence. Embarking on a personal journey to uncover the truth, she faces a series of traumatic discoveries that take her to the ruggedly beautiful Cornish coast, where hidden truths, past betrayals and a 25-year-old mystery threaten not just her identity, but also her life.
Chilling, complex and profoundly moving, In Her Wake is a gripping psychological thriller that questions the nature of family – and reminds us that sometimes the most shocking crimes are committed closest to home.
In Her Wake ended up being different from what I was expecting, but not in a bad way.. More about that in the review!
≈ Now ≈ The Abrupt Physics of Dying, Paul E. Hardisty
Claymore Straker is trying to forget a violent past. Working as an oil company engineer in the wilds of Yemen, he is hijacked at gunpoint by Islamic terrorists. Clay has a choice: help uncover the cause of a mysterious sickness afflicting the village of Al Urush, close to the company’s oil-processing facility, or watch Abdulkader, his driver and close friend, die. As the country descends into civil war and village children start dying, Clay finds himself caught up in a ruthless struggle between opposing armies, controllers of the country’s oil wealth, Yemen’s shadowy secret service, and rival terrorist factions. As Clay scrambles to keep his friend alive, he meets Rania, a troubled journalist. Together, they try to uncover the truth about Al Urush. But nothing in this ancient, unforgiving place is as it seems. Accused of a murder he did not commit, put on the CIA’s most-wanted list, Clay must come to terms with his past and confront the powerful forces that want him dead. A stunning debut eco-thriller, The Abrupt Physics of Dying is largely based on true events – the horrific destruction of fresh water and lives by oil giants. Gritty, gripping and shocking, this book will not only open your eyes but keep them glued to the page until the final, stunning denouement is reached.
More than 400 pages, that is scary, especially when my attention-span plays hide and seek, but this thriller sounds so good!
∨ Next ∨ Don’t Stop Me Now, Colleen Coleman
A hilarious feel good read about finding your feet when life pulls the rug out from under you.
Poppy Bloom has a Life Plan: PhD in psychology, research job at her university, and a life of domestic bliss with handsome boyfriend Gregory.
But then she finishes her PhD with no job offer, no relationship, and nowhere to live. Being unemployed and living back at her mum’s house in her vampire-themed childhood bedroom was definitely not the plan.
Poppy is back to square one and miserable, so when she runs into childhood friend Leanne she jumps at the opportunity to catch up. The chance to run into Leanne’s gorgeous brother Tom is just a bonus…
Soon Poppy’s scored an internship at a radio station, a boyfriend, and a whole netball team of friends: things are on the up.
But life has a way of tripping you up when you least expect it, and Poppy soon has to decide where her priorities lie… With new friends, a new career and a new romance, can Poppy keep everyone happy, or is everything about to tumble down around her?
A laugh-out-loud story about friendship, second chances, and new love, perfect for fans of Lindsey Kelk, Marian Keyes and Jane Costello.
My only break of the month from the Orenda project with this light read!
What’s on your reading list this week? Happy reading!
I loved In Her Wake although it wasn’t what I expected either!

It is funny how we create expectations about a book and can see how wrong we were at the end!

Whenever I look at the book, I’m afraid, haha! It’s more than 400 pages and I’m more used to smaller books so it feels I’m going so sloooooowly!

Interested in Don’t Stop Me Now too.. I think we can all use a lighter read now and then again 😀. Getting even more curious why your status for In Her Wake is complicated. I’m guessing some things you liked and some not.. so I really want to know the tipping point of the balance for this one.

It’s a shame that your treatment hindered your reading, although if it works it will definitely be worth it. I really like the sound of Don’t Stop Me Now’, it sounds like an easy reading fun book. I like to read a chick lit book in between my crime thrillers too, it keeps the enjoyment of both genres. I look forward to more Orenda stuff too.
