Suntag… No wait, Christmas Post or the Story of the Dreaded Phone Call

Last week, the dreaded phone call came.

I’m not talking about the bailiff requesting his money. Not, it’s much worse.

The family call.

Everything was rolling along nicely, we talked about the weather (bad), our health (worse than bad) and the dogs (crazy and happy), when suddenly there was pause. My heart stopped. My hand shook. My blood ran cold as I heard the words I wish they had never whispered.

scared phone.gif

“What do you want for Christmas?”

You might wonder why I reacted this way to a simple and quite nice question. First of all, Santa and I aren’t good friends since he ate all the cookies when I was 5. Secondly, it reminds me I need to go gifts shopping too.

If I were elected president (don’t laugh, anyone can do it. Remember who’s the next head of America? If he did it, so can I.) I would forbid the exchange of presents during the holiday season and make compulsory the eat-all-you-can challenges. Because let’s be honest, the food is the best part of Christmas.

Anyway, while my brain was frantically looking for an answer that would satisfy the other end of the call, my blogging brain cells (yes, they’re separated from the others) informed me I’d better go and write a list on the blog in case my Santas’ English is good enough to decipher it *evil laughter*

#1 A Book.

Obviously. But don’t be fooled, oh reader, for I do no wish for a book picked from the bookstore recommendations display. I want a book from my favorite genre. A book I have been talking about. A book I showed you 10 times on the laptop’s screen, hoping to get your attention long enough for your mind to get the hint.

#2 Socks.

How dare you asking me why? It’s WINTER here! I’m cold. That is why I need socks. Preferably not the boring white or black ones they sell in bulks. Homemade woolen socks! Or if you can’t knit, cute and fluffy Harry Potter socks. Cat socks. Bookish socks. Socks I can proudly wear and take photographs of to add to my Instagram account.

Available here. I can’t resist those socks. Chocolate to keep my feet warm!!

#3 Books.

Recommend me something. Blow my mind.

#4 More media space on WordPress.

#5 The “Cant read without my lipstick” OPI nailpolish.

Because there’s “read” in the name. Yes, I’m that superficial. Also, the color looks great (Bookstagram pics again!)

screen-shot-2016-12-01-at-16-36-21

#6 Vouchers for more books.

That TBR won’t grow by itself (although sometimes it does feel like it)

#7 Mugs and cups.

One can never have enough tea cups. How do you play “how many cups of tea can you drink in a day” with your friends if you don’t have cups? Mugs are for solitary pleasures: nice evenings with a fantasy book, a Friday night date with a romance, an unplanned lunch with a thriller.

Screen Shot 2016-12-01 at 19.35.46.png

Look at that beauty created by the wonderful and creative Lauren @ Wonderless Reviews. You can find all of her work on Society 6 and Red Bubble!

#8 Fluffy cushions and a warm blanket.

Don’t deny your grandma side, you know you want to cuddle with a book comfortably settled in an armchair or a couch with your favorite cushions and a soft blanket. Preferably long so that the feet don’t stick out.

#9 Candles.

Because I’m obsessed with them but I only own one at the moment…

Screen Shot 2016-12-01 at 19.30.10.png

#10 A New Book Boyfriend.

Come on, don’t be shy, grab that copy with a half-naked guy on the cover and wrap him up with Christmas paper. I won’t be mad, I promise.

#11 A New pair Of Eyes.

Because my glasses are killing me, they’re hiding my beautiful eyes, and I can read longer with eyes that don’t act like they’re 70 and ready to give up on life.

eyes .gif

#12 An AMAZON gift card.

Because the 231 books on there won’t magically appear on my Kindle!

i need 4 billions dollar.gif

#13 Hugs.

I’m a softie, and I’m broke, so I figured it would seem less awkward if I said I wanted hugs as that’s probably what you’ll get from me. With all my love.

happy-gilmore

#14 A Sick Day.

A “My child can’t go to work today because he’s sick” note so I can skimp work for a full day when a book needs my undivided attention.

Make it two notes!

#15 Chocolate.

Because chocolates help with book hangovers and you never know when you’ll need it. (Did you really believe I would not mention food in my list? Do you know me??)

chocolate.gif

#16 Bookmarks.

Even if I keep losing them, they’re totally needed to every book lover who can never remember what page they stopped at.

The truth is gifts are not what I expect from December. I live far away from my family so I don’t care for what they bring as long as there’s cheddar on the table, the heating on, and a table full of happy faces. The presents question makes me uncomfortable because forcing people to give gifts on specific day is plain weird. But I am lucky to have a family who cares and tries their best to please each other. I did this fun list thinking of them and what they do and don’t expect a book lover to ask for.

What’s on your letter for Santa? What’s the worst gift you ever received? Let’s share the forced shopping dreams and nightmares!

This was a pre-Christmas anxiety post. My apologies for the inconvenience. If you read it entirely, you are a true friend.

  1. 😂😂😂 Love this post, Donna!! I hate when people ask me what I want for Christmas because I never know how to answer. You listed some things I’d love to receive though especially books and candles 😀 Thank you so much for featuring one of my products ♥ I will definitely support someone buying you that 😉 And I can’t do a physical hug, but here’s a virtual one [hugggggssssss].

    1. 😀 So happy you enjoyed it!! With Christmas approaching faster than kids run to an ice cream truck in summer, I can feel the anxiety of the holiday creeping in and I needed a post to get rid of some of the pressure! You are very welcome, I love your products, they all look so good you’re doing a great job!
I LOVE VIRTUAL HUGS!!! You get all the love and no germs 😂

Also loved that you wrapped it up with a “its all good as long as we one big happy family” speech! 😛 Here’s hoping you’ll get everything you want for Christmas! 😉 Oh, and you definitely can become the POTUS if an orange can do it. 😀

    1. I had to get it all out of my system, and who knows, maybe my hubby will get an idea or two :p I couldn’t do a gifts list without the cheddar and happy family line, it would not have been the same! I really need the cheddar and my family is bringing it so… 😂
It’s decided, I want to be POTUS!

    1. The socks are my favorites, they look so comfy and yummy! But my dog would totally eat my feet with those 😂 I wish eyes could be changed regularly, they get tired so easily! I hate having to stop reading because of them, it’s frustrating! Great picks 😀
      Hugs are my favorites ❤

    1. I know, those socks are magical! I’m afraid my dogs would eat my toes if I wore them 😂 Christmas shopping is the worst!! I don’t mind shopping for someone for their birthday or just to make them happy but the end of the year makes it feel forced somehow.

  4. The Amazon gift card is the best present I could ever receive… I hate it also when they know you love reading so they just buy whichever book is on display on the store. I HAVE MY TASTES YOU KNOW.

And socks, oh, socks. I also need nailpolish!

So I don’t know about recommendations, but I just finished reading A Mother’s Confession and it’s not a thriller by any means and it is devastatingly sad but it’s an emotional book, maybe you would like it! BUt maybe don’t read it around Christmas. It’s already too sad XD

P.S Food is definitely the best part of Christmas

    1. Yes!!!!! A book is not just a book! It’s a story and I don’t like them all! Why is it so difficult to understand?? I don’t want my gift to be 50 Shades! 😂
Thank you for the recommendation *Christmas Huh!!* I have heard about the books, it’s been around for the last couple of days. I’ll add it to the 2017 TBR! 😀

  5. OMG I love your list !!! Maybe the only thing missing are PJ’s? Warm, fluffy ones with a cute cat or dog on it? There’s nothing on my letter to Santa and I’m not expecting any gifts. The upside is I don’t have to stress for buying gifts either. And even if there was, I always seem to want things that money can’t buy. Although that mug there that you’re showing, I love it !!!

    1. How could I forget pajamas?? Flannel Pjs are a must!! Silly me! My real letter to Santa included a wish for help and it was granted so … 🙂 Sometimes the best gifts don’t come from shops! I’m sending hugs your way, they are good to keep warm! I know, that mug is gorgeous! Those colors ❤

          1. I just poured a huge cup o’ joe and locked my door for an hour or so.. and done! Well almost 😉 I did not have any Rum. I found a small bottle of organic Vodka in the freezer that someone brought us from Hawaii, but ewwww…

  7. I loved this post! So light and funny! This made me do some critical think on what I would like for Christmas 🤔 but the #1 thing for me would be books and lots of them! The lord knows I have plenty of books on my shelf that I have yet to read, but I-I need more! It fuels my soul! 📚❤️🎄

    1. Thank you so much! 🙂 I needed to do a little Christmas post on the blog to make the holiday lighter. Books are a must on a bookworm’s list, that is for sure. We can’t have enough of them. I can’t imagine running out of things to read, that would be the end of everything!

  8. That was a great list, Donna! I hpe you get everything on that list that you wished for 🙂
My list? Eh, I don’t really do xmas that much… As long as I’m given a couple of hours of uninterrupted time on my own to read, I’ll be a happy puppy! 😀

    1. I knew something was missing from the list! TIME!! 🙂 The truth is I already got what I wanted for Christmas, which was some help and my family around (I sound too cheesy xD) but it was fun to compile these gifts! I’ll ask Santa to give you reading time! ❤

  9. hahahaha this list made me laugh so much!! Especially your intro- I really thought it was gonna be bad! I don’t do Christmas cos I’m not from a Christian background, but every time I get asked what gift I’d like for gifts, the answer is always “books!” Or an amazon gift card so I can buy books! haha I would want that nail varnish too lol! And obviously you want funky socks- who doesn’t want funky socks?! 😉 hahaha I want a sick day note too!!!

  10. lol Books, Socks and warm blankets – those were my favourites! And really, what more does a bookworm need 🙂 Hope you get everything you ask for and more!

  11. This was a beautiful post! That question always stumps me because, well, usually if there’s something I want to have, I bought it for myself.

What I do love about Christmas is GIVING gifts though. I love the looks on my family’s face when they unwrap something that they really wanted. Those looks and the food are definitely, to me, the best part of Christmas.

Unfortunately, it’s also why I spend the greater part of November and December broke…

OK, so I have a severe bookmark addiction. I have so many bookmarks in my bedside table that I don’t know how I’m ever going to use them all. But about 90% of them come from http://www.craftedvan.com
If you ever need bookmarks and want something adorable that you can’t lose very easily (these bookmarks are magnetic!), then definitely check these guys out!

    1. Same here. I don’t feel comfortable having someone buying me things. Giving gifts is awesome, but I’m always dreading getting the wrong kind of present. It’s easy for the closest people to you but for the others it can be tricky! Thank you, I’ll check out those bookmarks!

      1. Agreed. I DREAD giving a bad present. Which is why I only buy gifts for those closest to me and give everyone else baked goods 😛
Oh good! They have some adorable Christmas ones! I have a Santa one that I’m at using at the moment 😊

  12. Great post Donna, people have actually started asking me early what it is I want for Christmas/my birthday, just because I take ages to get back to them. My sister asked for a Christmas list at the beginning of November and it took me a good month to get back to her with what I wanted. She also asked me to not include books because she’s always buying those for me and that stumped me for a bit as well!
I could definitely do with a new pair of eyes though, and a new headache-free head as well while I’m at it. But until that happens I’ll settle for books, chocolate and Amazing gift cards as well! 😀

      1. Yeah, in the end I snuck one book in there and I think she got it for me. I just don’t think she wanted a list that was 100% books you know?
It’s probably on the Twining’s website or something, if you search Apple and Pear Green Tea you should be able to find it. 🙂

  13. Awesome post! ❤ I always hated that question too… Santa Claus isn't that big of a thing here in Argentina and only the kids get gifts, so I guess I don't have to worry about the question anymore. Like you said, the food and being together is the best part anyway. 😉 I would totally use your list if someone would ask though; perfect gifts!! And those socks are awesome.

    1. Thank you! ❤ I wish only kids would give their lists! This year I'm having trouble finding everything I need! 🙂 I'm in love with those socks. I'm happy to live in a country that gets cold fall and winter so I can wear my favorite socks 😀

      1. I hope you will find everything you need! 🙂 And while I love socks, I hate cold weather (it’s actually one of the reasons I decided to leave the Netherlands; waaaay too cold).

  14. Oh my god, Donna, this is the PERFECT LIST. I mean, SOCKS. Yes, socks. I know it’s summer where I am (which is crap) but I wouldn’t mind some really cute ones as a Christmas gift. And candles and mugs and cups! 💖

I also live far away from my family, and Christmastime can be bittersweet! It’s looking like this year is going to be my first Christmas away from them, and I’m… both sad and excited about it? It’ll be really, really nice to have them around, but I also wouldn’t mind creating some of my own traditions, if you will. Hope you have a great Christmas. 😊

  15. I agree that food and family are the best part of Christmas. I hope you have a lovely time and perhaps get some books and cool socks! Your post actually reminded met that all my socks are boring and that maybe I should try the sock thing on my Bookstagram, haha. Actually, I’m not that comfortable taking pics of my legs/feet but I do like the pics other people take!
I’d love an extra sick day after Christmas. But the good thing at my job is that since this year Christmas is on Saturday, we get Friday and Monday off!! 😀 That’s a four day weekend. Can’t wait!

  16. Great list! I totally agree with what you said about books from your favourite genre, that you want to read or that come highly recommended – it’s super disappointing to receive a book you’ve got no interest in reading, and that the gifter probably also hasn’t read and has no interest in reading.

As for worst gift I’ve ever received… I once got a toothpick dispenser. Apparently it won some design award… but it was still a toothpick dispenser. That’s one of the only times I’ve had trouble keeping a straight face upon opening a serious gift and being told what it was.
